Edit: Our humble home was featured on A Beautiful Mess. You can view that post here.
My husband, Leo, and I live in an 850 square foot, 1950’s track home in a quiet neighborhood in Ventura, CA. I’ve grown to love every detail of it as we made it our own. It was not easy to create a more ideal space because we were limited to what we can do since our place is a rental. Good thing is, we both love a good challenge.
For the living area, we managed to acquire a good mix of midcentury-inspired and handmade pieces that tell who we are as a couple and as individuals. And since our living room is part office/work area, our main goal is to keep our home inspiring and cohesive. As wedding photographers, we believe that living in an inspiring and organized home will not only keeps us sane, and our minds fresh, but it will also bring out the creativity in us.
In addition to our living space, we are blessed to have a spacious backyard that we use for barbecues, dinners, board game nights, and cocktails almost every time we have friends and family over. The idea with the backyard is to keep it minimalistic (like the rest of the house,) because we appreciate the open space that it brings. Our outdoor space also offers a quick escape when we feel a bit burnout from processing a ton of photos that we deal with from time to time.
My favorite piece is our Danish modern credenza that we found in Los Angeles while combing through a row of midcentury furniture shops. We made it a home for some of our favorite items in the living room, such as our record player, books, and vinyl. We love how clean and simple it looks.
During one of our frequent trips to Echo Park, we found a home decor shop that sells cardboard deer head trophy. Leo loves it! We like the idea of hanging something like it on our wall, but I find it creepy to hang an actual head of a dead wild animal. So, Leo and I agreed that hanging a cardboard piece is a good compromise.
Leo keeps himself busy with building wood furniture during his free time. In particular, he built our patio dining table and benches from scratch, among other things in our home. It’s always a blessing to be able to enjoy the fruits of his labor. His wood pieces are not only great but they make our place more like us.
Your home is perfect in every way! Can’t wait to see more!
Thanks Margeaux! How I love your name!
Thanks, Kat! I can’t wait to see more from your blog. I have a coffee table identical to yours that my husband made me. Did Leo make yours? A+ on your home, lovely lady!

Thanks Brooke! My husband made the coffee table from a half palette and metal pipes. 🙂

Kat,
I saw your home on ABM today and just had this feeling you were a believer by the way you talked about your talented husband and home. Loved seeing your home there and here! Blessings!
Thank you for your kind words! 🙂
Hi Kat,
Saw your home tour on ABM-congrats! Had to stop in and say hi, as we’re neighbors of sorts (we are in SP). Your place is so cute…love those pendant lights! 🙂
Thanks for the kind words! We are neighbors! I’m pretty sure you do a bulk of your shopping in Ventura. I’m very new to the blogging world and super excited to start getting active on here.
Where is the deer from? xo
Hi Ashley! We bought it from a store in Silver Lake/Echo Park area. But you can purchase from the manufacturer directly here – http://www.etsy.com/shop/CardboardSafari.

Hi Kat! I discovered your blog through the obvious venue this morning…but, I wanted to stop by and say, I think we live pretty close to each other! I also live in a quiet neighborhood in Ventura and the style of your house looks to be just like a friend of mine’s home. I love your attitude and minimalistic style. It rings true to my own apartment decor. If you ever want a new friend…I know I always love meeting new people. 🙂
Thanks for reaching out and your kind words, Robin! There’s really no other place quite like Ventura. It’s nice to be able to connect with local, like-minded people. I would love to meet you!
